Noida: A major petition was filed in the Supreme Court against pornographic content on social media and OTT platforms. Under this petition, the central government and social media platforms were asked to take immediate action on this issue.
During the hearing of this case today, the Supreme Court has issued notice to many social media platforms including the central government.
Platforms issuing notice
Apart from the central government, the Supreme Court has issued notice to major social media and OTT platforms, including Netflix, Ullu Digital Limited, Alt Balaji, Twitter, Meta Platform and Google. The court has taken a tough step towards banning pornographic content on these platforms.
Demand for National Content Control Authority (NCCO)
Former Information Commissioner Uday Mahurkar and other petitioners in a petition filed in the Supreme Court have demanded the formation of a National Content Control Authority (NCCO) from the Central Government. He says that this authority will effectively ban obscenity on all social media and OTT platforms.
Appeal to follow guidelines
The petitioners also urged that all social media and OTT platforms should set clear guidelines to prevent obscenity, so that such content can be controlled.
Supreme Court’s concern
Supreme Court judge BR Gavai remarked during the hearing of the case that parents give phones to their children to keep them busy, which is a serious issue. He also said that the executive and the legislature should keep a strict watch on this.
