Greater Noida : Concerns have once again been raised over the deteriorating condition of the Surajpur Wetland in Gautam Budh Nagar after reports highlighted dried and fallen trees at the ecologically sensitive site. Environmental issues surrounding the wetland have drawn attention following a letter addressed to the District Forest Officer (DFO), Gautam Budh Nagar.

In the letter, resident Amit Gupta cited several media reports that allegedly showed poor maintenance at the Surajpur Wetland, including dried-up trees and neglected green areas. He pointed out that the report clearly mentioned that the area was not receiving adequate attention from the concerned authorities.

The concern comes amid ongoing plantation campaigns across the district. Gupta also cited another report published in other media platforms, which stated that the Forest Department had received one of the lowest plantation targets due to a shortage of available land.

Questions raised over environmental management

The letter questioned the effectiveness of plantation drives when existing ecological zones are not properly maintained. Surajpur Wetland, considered the only major wetland in Gautam Budh Nagar district, plays an important role in maintaining biodiversity and environmental balance in the region. According to the letter, discussions regarding the wetland’s poor condition had also taken place last year, but residents believe that the situation has not improved significantly.

Appeal for immediate action

Amit Gupta urged the Forest Department and related authorities to take immediate cognisance of the matter and ensure proper maintenance of the wetland and surrounding plantation areas. He stressed that plantation drives should not be treated merely as annual targets but as an essential environmental responsibility. The letter further emphasised that planting trees alone is not sufficient and that proper monitoring and care after planting are equally important.

Residents highlight pollution concerns

The appeal also linked the issue to the worsening environmental conditions in Noida and Greater Noida, which frequently rank among India’s most polluted urban regions. Residents believe that preserving wetlands and green cover is essential for improving air quality and ecological sustainability in the district. The matter is now expected to draw attention from the Forest Department and local authorities regarding conservation efforts at Surajpur Wetland.
