Greater Noida West : The Water Department of the Greater Noida Authority has imposed a fine of ₹5 lakh on Ajnara Homes Society, located in Sector 16B, Greater Noida West, for misusing the municipal water supply and failing to maintain basic water infrastructure.

Residents of the society had been facing severe water shortages due to a malfunctioning motor pump. During an inspection prompted by complaints circulating on social media, the authority found that not only was the pump defunct, but also that water supplied by the Authority was being inappropriately used for gardening, flushing, and housekeeping purposes.

According to Rajesh Kumar, Senior Manager of the Water Department, the use of supply water for such purposes is a violation of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) norms. As per NGT guidelines, only treated water from a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) is allowed for non-potable uses like landscaping, toilet flushing, and cleaning.

The issue sparked concern among officials, especially as the social media uproar was beginning to tarnish the Authority’s public image. In response, the Additional Chief Executive Officer (ACEO) of the Greater Noida Authority directed society managements to ensure proper maintenance of internal water networks and adhere strictly to environmental norms.

He further emphasized that STP-treated water must be used for all non-drinking purposes to avoid depleting fresh water resources. The Authority also warned that similar action would be taken against other societies if found violating water usage norms.

This action sets a precedent to ensure that water resources are managed responsibly, and residents receive uninterrupted basic amenities,” an official statement from the Authority read.
