Noida : With Uttar Pradesh witnessing intense heatwave conditions and a sharp rise in electricity consumption, the state is facing a situation similar to a power crisis. In view of the increasing load on the power infrastructure, the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) has issued a public advisory urging residents to use electricity judiciously and adopt energy-saving practices.

UPPCL recommends setting ACs at 24°C

The power department has specifically advised residents to operate air conditioners at 24 degrees Celsius. According to energy experts, this temperature is considered both comfortable and energy-efficient. Officials stated that increasing the AC temperature by even 1 degree can reduce electricity consumption by nearly 5-6%, which can significantly ease the burden on the power grid during peak summer months. The advisory comes at a time when electricity demand has surged across urban and rural areas due to continuous use of cooling appliances.

Residents asked to avoid unnecessary power usage

UPPCL has also appealed to consumers to switch off fans, air conditioners and other electrical appliances when not in use. Residents have been advised to avoid excessive use of decorative lighting and high-load electrical devices.

Small steps taken collectively by consumers can result in substantial power savings and help prevent issues such as transformer failures and local outages.

During summer, electricity demand increases multiple times, leading to overloading of transformers and transmission systems. As a result, incidents of line faults, breakdowns and local power cuts tend to rise sharply.

The Uttar Pradesh government has already directed officials to ensure 24-hour electricity supply in cities, while maintaining scheduled supply in rural areas. The government is currently focusing on increasing power generation capacity, strengthening feeder monitoring systems and ensuring quicker resolution of consumer complaints during the peak summer season.

The latest appeal by the electricity department highlights the growing challenge of maintaining a balance between power demand and supply. Officials believe that public cooperation in conserving electricity can play a major role in reducing power cuts and stabilising the system during the ongoing heatwave.
