The Mumbai Metro Line 4 is set to receive 39 driverless trainsets which will be made in India and supplied by French giant Alstom. The company on Tuesday said that it will also supply a Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling system to Mumbai Metro Line 4 under a deal that amounts to a “few” hundred million euros, according to financial news outlet Livemint.

These metro cars will be manufactured in Sri City, a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Andhra Pradesh, designed at Alstom’s engineering centre in Bengaluru and its propulsion will be manufactured at Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore and bogies will be made in Savli, Gujarat.

Alstom said in a statement accessed by the newspaper that the 39 trainsets will include 39 trainsets of 6 cars each.

These driverless Mumbai Metro Line 4 trains, according to the French multinational rail transport systems manufacturer, will offer passenger comfort with unique designs. It added that its high performance and safety is guaranteed by reliable components that include electrical braking and cybersecurity measures.

“At the core is Alstom’s world-leading CBTC technology, enabling driverless operation, offering an exceptional level of service across the combined line length of 35.3 km,” the company said in its statement.

“Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has been commissioned to supply 234 Metropolis metro cars (39 trainsets of six cars each) and Communications Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling system with five years of maintenance service, by Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T), India,” Alstom said.

Ling Fang, Region President, APAC, Alstom said, “We are honoured to be chosen for the prestigious Mumbai Metro Line 4 project, further strengthening our long-standing association with the city of Mumbai. Alstom-built trains and signalling solutions are already serving on other Mumbai Metro lines. This ambitious new project presents more opportunities for us to provide best-in-class solutions to the commuters and contribute to elevating the financial capital’s infrastructure”.

L&T has partnered with Alstom for the rolling stock and signalling system with five years of maintenance, the statement further added.

The Mumbai Metro’s Line 4, a 35.3-km elevated stretch linking Wadala in central Mumbai to Kasarvadavali in Thane, is set to become one of the city’s longest corridors with 32 stations along its route. Once operational, it will connect seamlessly with the Eastern Express Highway, the Monorail and other existing metro lines, boosting east–west and north–south connectivity across the metropolis.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has handed the systems contract for Line 4 to Larsen & Toubro (L&T), which will deliver an integrated package covering rolling stock and signalling.
