Jewar, Gautam Buddh Nagar: After years of anticipation, Noida International Airport at Jewar officially entered the country’s aviation map as it welcomed its first commercial flight on June 15, 2026. The inaugural IndiGo flight from Lucknow landed at the airport amid celebrations, marking the beginning of passenger operations at what is expected to become one of India’s largest aviation hubs.
The arrival of the first commercial aircraft was greeted with a traditional water cannon salute, symbolizing the launch of a new chapter in connectivity and economic development for western Uttar Pradesh and the National Capital Region (NCR).
The airport, developed to ease pressure on Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport and boost regional infrastructure, is expected to transform the economic landscape of Noida, Greater Noida, Yamuna City and surrounding districts.
A dream finally takes flight
For residents of Greater Noida and the Yamuna Expressway region, the launch of commercial operations is more than just the opening of an airport. Many see it as the realization of a long-awaited promise that could bring jobs, investment and global connectivity to the region.
“People have been hearing about the Jewar Airport project for over a decade. Seeing the first flight land is an emotional moment. It gives confidence that the region’s development plans are finally becoming a reality,” said Rajesh Sharma, a resident of Greater Noida.
Another resident, Neha Verma, said the airport would significantly reduce travel time for frequent flyers.
“Earlier, reaching Delhi Airport often meant spending hours in traffic. Having an international airport so close to home will be a major convenience for residents and business travelers alike,” she said.
Expectations from the airport
While the launch has generated excitement, residents also expressed hopes that supporting infrastructure will keep pace with the airport’s growth.
“Connectivity between residential sectors, metro corridors and the airport must improve quickly. The airport alone is not enough. Roads, public transport and last-mile connectivity will determine its success,” said social activist Amit Kumar.
Many residents also expect the airport to create employment opportunities for local youth.
“This project has the potential to generate thousands of jobs directly and indirectly. We hope local residents will receive adequate opportunities in aviation, hospitality and related sectors,” said Sunita Singh, a resident of Jewar.
Economic boost for the region
Industry experts believe the airport could become a catalyst for large-scale investments in logistics, warehousing, manufacturing and real estate. The surrounding Yamuna Expressway region has already witnessed growing interest from businesses looking to establish operations near the airport.
Local traders are optimistic that increased passenger movement will benefit hotels, restaurants, transportation services and retail businesses.
“The airport can change the entire economy of this region. Small businesses are looking forward to increased commercial activity in the coming years,” said businessman Deepak Agarwal.
The road ahead
With commercial operations now underway, the focus will shift to expanding routes, increasing passenger traffic and completing future development phases. Several domestic destinations are expected to be connected to Noida Airport in the coming months, while international services are likely to follow as infrastructure expands.
For residents who have watched the project evolve from a proposal into a functioning airport, the first landing represents more than an aviation milestone. It symbolizes the arrival of a new growth corridor that could redefine the future of Noida, Greater Noida and western Uttar Pradesh.
As the first passengers stepped onto the runway-facing terminal, many residents viewed the moment as the beginning of a transformative journey—one that could place the region firmly on the global aviation and economic map.
