New Delhi: In a significant move to strengthen road safety and ensure smoother traffic movement across the country’s National Highway network, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has intensified its drive against unauthorised parking and roadside encroachments. The initiative follows directions issued by the Supreme Court and reflects NHAI’s commitment to creating safer, more efficient and commuter-friendly highways.
Unauthorised parking, illegal roadside encroachments and unregulated commercial activities have long posed serious challenges to highway safety by obstructing traffic flow and increasing the risk of accidents. To tackle these issues, NHAI has identified 595 critical locations across various states where unauthorized parking has become a concern. The authority is now working in close coordination with state governments, district administrations and law enforcement agencies to remove these obstructions and restore safe traffic movement.
Action under legal provisions
As part of the enforcement drive, NHAI is taking action against encroachments under the provisions of the Control of National Highways (Land and Traffic) Act, 2002. The authority has also strengthened coordination with state governments to improve enforcement and monitoring.
To ensure sustained action, NHAI is facilitating the establishment of District Highway Safety Task Forces and the appointment of nodal officers in different districts. These teams will oversee compliance, coordinate between multiple agencies and help address safety-related concerns along National Highways in a timely manner.
Advanced traffic management systems to be audited
Alongside enforcement measures, NHAI has instructed its field offices to conduct immediate audits of all Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) installations across the National Highway network.
The audit will verify the functionality of critical safety infrastructure, including:
- Traffic monitoring cameras
- Video Incident Detection Systems
- Variable Speed Detection Systems
- Variable Message Signboards
- Emergency Call Boxes
NHAI has also directed officials to prioritise the deployment of ambulances and recovery vehicles, strengthen highway patrolling, integrate ATMS alerts with enforcement agencies and ensure proactive maintenance of safety infrastructure. These measures are expected to improve emergency response times, enhance enforcement capabilities and make highway travel safer for commuters.
Focus on safer and obstruction-free highways
The nationwide initiative underscores NHAI’s broader objective of building a safer, more reliable National Highway network by eliminating obstacles that compromise road safety. By combining strict enforcement with advanced technology and better inter-agency coordination, the authority aims to ensure seamless passenger and freight movement while reducing accidents caused by unauthorised activities along highways.
The latest measures are expected to significantly improve traffic management, strengthen highway surveillance and enhance the overall travel experience for millions of National Highway users across India.
