NEW DELHI: Education Minister Atishi announced that schools, colleges, and offices would remain closed in the city from September 8 to 10 due to the G20 Leaders Summit occurring from September 9 to 10. She emphasized Delhi’s readiness to host the delegates, mentioning the refurbishment of major roads to welcome foreign representatives. Atishi also highlighted the construction of a crucial tunnel, providing secure access to the India Trade Promotion Organisation complex, funded by the central government but built by the Public Works Department.
She explained that this tunnel links ‘Purana Qila’ to the Ring Road, enhancing security and serving as a valuable asset in the future. Atishi mentioned the planting of 1.5 lakh saplings and the installation of fountains and statues as part of preparations for the G20 summit. Additionally, major markets in Greater Kailash 2 and Mehrauli were beautified and renovated by the AAP-ruled Municipal Corporation of Delhi.
While Atishi acknowledged that there might be minor inconveniences due to restrictions, she stressed the importance of the G20 event for India, describing it as a significant opportunity for the country. The G20 Summit will be attended by world leaders, including US President Joe Biden and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, hosted at the state-of-the-art Bharat Mandapam Convention Centre in Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. However, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attend the summit.
India took over the G20 presidency on December 1 last year, with nearly 200 meetings related to G20 held in 60 cities across the nation. To facilitate seamless interactions with Indian and foreign delegates during the summit, the government launched the ‘G20 India’ mobile app, offering language options for all member countries and providing access to UPI and navigation services.
