In a major boost to Chennai’s suburban rail network, Southern Railway is preparing to roll out the second phase of air-conditioned electric train services, with plans underway to introduce a new AC local train on some of the city’s most crowded routes. Among the routes being prioritised, the Chennai Central-Arakkonam corridor is emerging as a key contender due to heavy commuter traffic. (Local18)

The move follows the positive response received by the first AC suburban train manufactured in Chennai, which was introduced on the Chennai Beach-Chengalpattu route. The service was widely appreciated by passengers for its air-conditioned comfort and smoother travel experience. (Local18)

Demand for additional AC suburban services has grown steadily, particularly from daily commuters who face severe crowding during peak morning and evening hours. Many passengers have pointed out that travelling in conventional suburban trains during rush hours can be extremely difficult. (Local18)

Responding to these demands, a proposal was sent to the Railway Board, following which the Integral Coach Factory began work on a second AC electric train. The new 12-coach rake has now entered the testing stage. (Local18)

Currently undergoing trials at the Annanur yard, the train is expected to be introduced into service soon. With a total passenger capacity of 4,914, the new AC train is expected to mark a significant upgrade for Chennai’s suburban rail system and could bring notable relief to thousands of daily commuters.
