Greater Noida: In a major relief for residents of Gautam Buddh Nagar, a team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) will soon be permanently stationed in Greater Noida. The move is expected to significantly improve emergency response time during disasters and accidents across Noida and Greater Noida.
At present, the NDRF team operates from Ghaziabad, often leading to delays in reaching accident sites in the district during emergencies. With a local base being prepared in Greater Noida, authorities aim to strengthen disaster management and ensure quicker rescue operations.
Flats being prepared in sector Omicron-1A
Repair and renovation work is progressing rapidly at a group housing society in Sector Omicron-1A, where residential flats are being readied for NDRF personnel. Officials said essential facilities such as electricity, drinking water supply, painting and maintenance work are being completed to ensure comfortable accommodation for the personnel. Once the work is completed, the flats will be officially handed over to the NDRF team.

20 LIG and 10 MIG flats approved at Lohia Awas
The Greater Noida Authority has approved the allocation of 20 LIG and 10 MIG flats for NDRF personnel at the multi-storey residential complex ‘Lohia Awas’ in Sector Omicron-1A. All flats will be provided on rent and personnel will pay rent according to their House Rent Allowance (HRA). Officials believe this arrangement will solve a major housing challenge for the force. If required, additional land may also be provided for storing emergency equipment and operational materials.
Current arrangement in Ghaziabad is causing delays
Currently, the NDRF team is stationed in Ghaziabad. Although accommodation was earlier provided at the NSEZ (Noida Special Economic Zone), many personnel reportedly do not stay there due to poor living conditions. As a result, response times during emergencies in Noida and Greater Noida are often affected, especially during critical rescue operations.
Questions raised after the Yuvraj Mehta incident
The issue gained serious attention after the tragic death of software engineer Yuvraj Mehta in January 2026. Mehta reportedly died after falling into a water-filled pit in Greater Noida, triggering widespread criticism over the district’s disaster preparedness and emergency response system. Despite being a rapidly developing high-tech district, timely rescue support could not be provided during the incident, raising concerns about the administration’s preparedness.

Administration is strengthening disaster management
Following the incident, authorities have begun focusing on strengthening disaster management systems across the district. Greater Noida Authority ACEO Soumya Srivastava said renovation work on the flats is underway and all necessary facilities are being restored before handing them over to the NDRF team. Officials believe the decision will help authorities respond more effectively to future emergencies and improve coordination during rescue operations.
Faster relief expected for residents
With the NDRF team set to be stationed within Greater Noida, emergency response during accidents, floods, building collapses or other disasters is expected to become much faster. Residents are hopeful that the move will improve overall safety and reduce response delays in the fast-growing urban region.
