Noida launches the Google Speed Limit Project with Gautam Buddha Nagar Police and Google, aiming to cut road accident deaths by 50% through real-time speed alerts

Road safety continues to be a pressing concern in the country, with thousands losing their lives each year due to traffic accidents. Despite multiple awareness campaigns by government agencies and NGOs, overspeeding remains a persistent threat on roads. In a significant move to tackle this challenge, Noida has become the first city in Uttar Pradesh to launch the ‘Google Speed Limit Project’, a collaboration between the Gautam Buddha Nagar Police Commissionerate and Google.
The project was inaugurated virtually by Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police Rajeev Krishnan and will initially operate as a pilot program in Noida. Through this initiative, Google Maps users will be able to see speed limits for all mapped roads in the city and receive alerts when approaching accident-prone zones, enabling drivers to exercise greater caution.
Road safety statistics underscore the urgency of such measures. Official data indicate that 53% of road accidents in Uttar Pradesh are linked to overspeeding, contributing to nearly 22,000 deaths annually, approximately four times higher than fatalities caused by crime. The authorities aim to reduce road accident deaths by up to 50% within a year through this initiative.
Speaking about the programme, Noida Police Commissioner Laxmi Singh said, “As part of Traffic Safety Month, we are advancing our goal of ‘Safe Vision, Safe Roads’ across the state under the DGP’s guidance. Today, with the launch of this initiative, the roads of Gautam Buddha Nagar have been mapped, and speed limits for each road are now available on Google Maps. Drivers can now see their current speed alongside the prescribed limit, promoting citizen policing and self-discipline on the roads.”
The initiative leverages the widespread reach of Google Maps, which millions of users access daily. By providing real-time speed limit information and hazard alerts, officials hope to instill safer driving habits and significantly reduce traffic-related casualties in the region. Analysts believe that the combination of technology and enforcement could serve as a model for other cities in the state and across India.
