FASTag: The government has introduced a major change for FASTag users with the launch of OneTag, a new portability system that will allow motorists to change their FASTag issuing bank without replacing the physical sticker on their vehicle. Much like mobile users can port their SIM to another service provider while keeping the same phone number, OneTag will allow FASTag users to move their tag from one participating bank to another while retaining the same FASTag ID and vehicle registration number.

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari launched the OneTag portability system at the Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai. The system has been jointly developed by Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL) and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). The portability facility is aimed at eliminating the need to repeatedly close an existing FASTag account, obtain a new physical sticker and affix it to the vehicle when changing banks. Under the new system, the existing RFID-based FASTag sticker will remain valid. Only the bank managing the FASTag account will change.

How To Port FASTag From One Bank To Another? The FASTag portability process will be available through NHAI’s Rajmargyatra mobile application and is designed to be completed digitally. Users will first need to download and open the Rajmargyatra app to access the OneTag portability facility. To begin the process, users will have to enter the details of their existing FASTag and vehicle to check whether the tag is eligible for portability. The required verification must be completed before the request to move the FASTag to another bank can proceed.

Once the eligibility check is completed, users will need to provide their consent to transfer the FASTag from the existing issuing bank to another participating bank. They can then select their preferred bank from the list of partner banks participating in the OneTag portability framework. The selected bank will carry out the required onboarding and verification process. Users may need to complete the necessary customer verification before the new bank can take over the FASTag service.

Once the process is successfully completed, the FASTag will be linked to the new bank. The existing physical sticker will remain attached to the vehicle, while the FASTag ID and vehicle registration number will continue to remain unchanged. The existing sticker on the vehicle will remain active, meaning motorists will not need to remove it or affix a new one. The FASTag ID and vehicle registration number will also remain unchanged. NPCI will update the new issuer’s details on the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) network, allowing toll payments to continue to be deducted automatically.

Do You Need A New FASTag Sticker? No. The ability to retain the same physical FASTag sticker is one of the main features of the OneTag system. Previously, changing the FASTag issuer generally meant closing the existing account, completing the process with another bank and obtaining a new physical tag. With OneTag, the same RFID sticker can remain attached to the vehicle while the FASTag is moved to another participating issuer. The vehicle registration number and FASTag ID will also remain the same. In simple terms, users can now change the bank without changing the tag.

What Happens To The Old FASTag Account? The old FASTag account will not be completely removed from the process immediately after portability. The existing issuer will continue to be responsible for matters connected to the previous account, including pending transactions, refunds and the settlement of the security deposit. Once the porting process is completed, however, the new bank will take over the management of the FASTag service. This arrangement is intended to ensure that pending issues with the previous account are settled while the user moves to a new issuer.

Will FASTag Continue To Work At Toll Plazas? Yes. Motorists will continue using FASTag in the same way at toll plazas. Once the porting process is completed, NPCI will update the new bank’s information on the NETC network. Toll payments will continue to be deducted automatically through the FASTag system. Users will not need to change the way they use their vehicle at toll plazas simply because they have changed the bank managing their FASTag.

Why Has OneTag Been Introduced? OneTag is intended to give FASTag users greater flexibility in choosing the bank that manages their tag. It also removes the inconvenience of repeatedly replacing physical FASTag stickers whenever users want to change their issuing bank. By retaining the same tag, the system is also expected to reduce the need to manufacture and dispatch replacement FASTags.

FASTag penetration in India currently exceeds 98%. Of the approximately 13 crore FASTags issued, around 6 crore are active. According to Nitin Gadkari, the FASTag system is saving around 71 crore hours of travel time every year, with the economic value of the time saved estimated at approximately Rs 68,500 crore. The system is also estimated to save around 56 crore litres of fuel annually, valued at approximately Rs 5,250 crore.

What Else Is Changing For FASTag Users? The government is also working towards a completely barrier-free tolling system, which is expected to further reduce waiting time and fuel consumption at toll plazas. In another proposed change, the government is preparing to introduce an annual local pass for residents living within a 20-kilometre radius of a toll plaza. The proposed pass is expected to cost around Rs 1,500 and would provide an annual option for eligible local commuters. At present, such local passes are generally issued on a monthly basis.

The new annual pass is expected to reduce the need for frequent renewals for people who regularly travel through nearby toll plazas. For FASTag users, however, the immediate change is OneTag. The new system means motorists will be able to change their FASTag bank while keeping the same physical sticker, Tag ID and vehicle registration number.
