The chairman of Tata Sons, N Chandrasekaran, announced that Tata Electronics’ Rs 27,000 crore Assam chip facility would be operational by 2025.
The groundbreaking ceremony for Tata Electronics’ chip assembly and testing facility in Jagiroad, Assam, was place on Saturday.
“Given our desire to move quickly, we are trying to accelerate the building of this factory and we hope sometime in 2025 we will be able to complete part of the facilities and quickly start our operations,” Chandrasekaran said in his speech during the event.
According to him, the company has employed roughly 1,000 local talent for the facility.
We are employing Assamese locals in order to prepare. We already employ one thousand people from Assam, who are trained and working at various facilities in Bangalore and other parts of India,” he continued.
The semiconductor unit is anticipated to create 15,000 direct jobs and 11,000–13,000 indirect jobs once it is operational.
Among those present at the groundbreaking ceremony were Tata Sons Chairperson N Chandrasekaran and Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma.
With hope for the project, Union Minister for Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that the building of the Assam plant will improve the region’s ecosystem as a whole.
The Minister stated in a statement that “because the ecosystem is so complex, whenever a semiconductor unit comes, there will be many more downstream employment opportunities created and many upstream opportunities too.”
He added that the plant’s talent would be developed in collaboration with numerous regional academic institutions, including NITs.
According to Vaishnaw, talent development for the facility will involve seven NITs from various northeastern states.
The proposal for Tata’s semiconductor unit in Morigaon, Assam, as well as for Tatas’ fab plant in Dholera and the CG Power facility in Sanand, Gujarat, was accepted by the Union Cabinet in February of this year.
Among these, the Assamese greenfield plant will serve the automotive, mobile device, and artificial intelligence (AI) industries, among others.
The company released a statement stating, “It is strategically located with proximity to current semiconductor packaging and test hubs in countries like Taiwan, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Singapore as well as access to abundant water and green power.
