Shimla Faces Parking Crunch as 37 Facilities Temporarily Shut Due to Tender Delay

Until new contracts are signed and the tendering process is finished, the impacted parking lots will be closed.

Due to a delay in the tendering procedure, the Municipal Corporation has temporarily shuttered 37 parking facilities, causing Shimla to face greater parking challenges. The Corporation had previously created little parking spots for locals in a number of wards to ease parking congestion. Contractors oversee the distribution of parking spots on these lots and impose a small yearly price.

But this year, the 37 parking facilities’ tenders were not processed, which resulted in their closure. Until new contracts are signed and the tendering process is finished, the impacted parking lots will be closed.

Shimla Municipal Corporation Mayor Surendra Chauhan told Local 18 that the Corporation will shortly begin the parking facility tender process. The locals will be the ones who will receive the parking places if there are no formal participants in the tender. To enable convenient parking close to their homes, residents will be required to pay an annual fee, and the vehicle numbers of those who park there will be registered.

Parking is mandatory for residents in Shimla’s wards and costs around Rs 11,800 a year. Every year, these parking agreements are renewed. The local council member oversees the renewal procedure, and if a contractor enters the offer, the parking is renewed via them. For this service, a receipt is given, and at the parking lot, car numbers are registered.
