Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has announced that phases one and two of the Airoli-Katai Naka Elevated Road Project are in their final stages and will be thrown open to traffic shortly — bringing long-awaited relief to commuters across Navi Mumbai, Thane, Dombivli, and Kalyan.

The elevated corridor stretches 12.71 km and is among the most significant infrastructure projects in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Once operational, it will cut the distance between Airoli and Dombivli by 10 km — and slash travel time between Navi Mumbai and Dombivli from 30-45 minutes to just 15 minutes.

Phase one — a 3.45 km stretch from Thane-Belapur Road to National Highway 4 — is over 92 percent complete. Phase two, covering 2.57 km from Airoli to Thane-Belapur Road, is already done. Both phases are being planned for a simultaneous inauguration in July.

MP Dr. Shrikant Shinde has been credited with pushing the project forward, conducting multiple site inspections, holding review meetings, and issuing directions to officials to accelerate execution — efforts MMRDA says helped the work reach completion at pace.

The corridor’s impact will be felt well beyond the Airoli-Dombivli stretch. Traffic movement on key arteries — Mahape, Shilphata, Kalyan Phata, and Thane-Belapur Road — is expected to move significantly faster once the elevated road is open.

With both phases set to open together in July, the Airoli-Katai Naka Elevated Road is shaping up as one of the most consequential additions to Mumbai’s road network this year — easing one of the region’s most congested commuter corridors just ahead of the monsoon peak.
