The airline reported that a plane carrying 62 people crashed in a fiery accident in a residential neighbourhood in a city in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil, on Friday. It was not immediately apparent how many people were killed or injured.
In a statement, the airline VoePass reported that four crew members and fifty-eight passengers perished in the crash of a jet bound for Guarulhos, the international airport in Sao Paulo. Firefighters provided no further information other than to confirm that the plane crashed in Vinhedo. Teams from the fire department were being sent to the scene of the accident.
In a neighbourhood full of homes, the Brazilian news network GloboNews displayed pictures of a sizable area on fire and smoke emerging from what appeared to be a plane fuselage. GloboNews also featured another footage of a jet spiralling as it descended vertically.
President Luiz Incio Lula da Silva ordered the audience to rise and observe a minute of quiet during an event in southern Brazil.
