Travelling between Mumbai and Goa could soon get a major upgrade.

Having said that, M2M Ferries, known for its Ro-Ro (roll-on, roll-off) service between Mumbai and Mandwa, is gearing up to launch a Mumbai-Goa RoPAX ferry service that will carry both passengers and vehicles.

For the same, M2M Ferries has acquired a 15-year-old RoPAX vessel from Italy, currently undergoing maintenance in Mumbai. Once ready, the ferry is expected to complete the Mumbai-Goa journey in just six and a half hours. The company has applied for the necessary approvals from the Director General of Shipping and other authorities to kick-start operations.

According to Hindustan Times, An M2M official shared, “Our plan is to run the RoPAX service from Ferry Wharf in Mazgaon (Mumbai) to Mormugao Port Authority (Goa). We are also in discussions with the Goa government to allow docking at Panaji for better connectivity.”

The new RoPAX vessel can accommodate 620 passengers and 60 cars. While the fare structure is yet to be decided, the company is hopeful that the central government will offer subsidies on fuel and tax concessions, making the service more affordable.

The Director General of Shipping, Shyam Jagannathan, confirmed that M2M Ferries’ application is under review. Pradeep Sudhakar, Chief Ship Surveyor, added that the documents have now moved to the Indian Register of Shipping for further clearance.

If successful, the Mumbai-Goa RoPAX ferry will join other similar services in India, such as the one running between Hazira and Ghogha in Gujarat.

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) is building new jetties for Ro-Ro services at Kashid, Revdanda, and Dighi along the Raigad coast. These are expected to be ready in about 18 months. The state government is also planning a Ro-Ro service to connect Dighi’s upcoming industrial town.
