The chief minister’s office announced on Wednesday that the bill approving reservations for Kannadigas in private sector organisations, businesses, and enterprises—approved by the Karnataka state cabinet on Monday—has been temporarily shelved.
The original Kannada text of the ‘X’ post states: “The Bill that aims to create reservations for Kannadigas in private sector organisations, businesses, and industries is now in the planning stages. At the following cabinet meeting, a thorough discussion will precede the making of a final decision.”

On Tuesday night, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced the quota.
Minister of Commerce and Industries MB Patil also announced the decision on ‘X,’ saying, “Business executives shouldn’t be alarmed as assured.”
“Bill is deferred until after additional discussions and investigation. The administration is dedicated to provide employment opportunities for Kannadigas going forward, albeit in a more cordial way,” he continued.
According to the Bill, employers in the state must give preference to local candidates for 70% of non-managerial positions and 50% of management-level positions.
Leaders in the sector, including Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw of Biocon, and the opposition, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), expressed worry over the Bill’s announcement. Industry executives predicted that the Bill will have a negative effect on IT-related industries.
