Hyderabad Metro: Phase 2 To Be Ready In 4 Years, Expanding 76.4 km Over 5 Corridors

Hyderabad Metro is set for a significant expansion with the newly approved Phase 2 project, which will add 76.4 km across five corridors to the city’s transit network. Expected to be completed within the next four years, this phase will enhance connectivity and increase capacity to serve an estimated additional 8 lakh daily commuters.

Currently, the existing 69 km of Hyderabad Metro’s Phase 1, which operates across three corridors, sees around 5 lakh passengers daily. With the state cabinet’s recent approval of the detailed project report (DPR) for Phase 2, the Telangana government aims to build a more extensive metro network and boost public transportation. This proposal will soon be submitted to the Union government for final approval, as per recent updates from The New Indian Express.

Key Financials and Funding Sources

Phase 2 is projected to cost approximately Rs 24,269 crore. The funding breakdown includes:

State Government: Rs 7,313 crore (30% of the total)

Union Government Contribution: Rs 4,230 crore (18%)

Loans from International Agencies (JICA, ADB, NDB): Rs 11,693 crore (48%), with the Centre offering guarantees.

Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Model: Rs 1,033 crore (4%)

This investment model reflects a blend of state and central government support, alongside international financial backing and private partnerships.

Expanding Hyderabad’s Metro Network and Reviving its Standing

Originally, the Telangana government aimed to extend Hyderabad’s metro network to 116.4 km over six corridors. While Phase 2 will add five of these corridors, feasibility studies are underway for a sixth corridor connecting the Airport to Fourth City, indicating further expansion possibilities.

The initial phase of Hyderabad Metro, developed under a PPP model, cost Rs 22,000 crore, creating a metro network once second only to Delhi in coverage. However, with rapid expansions in other metropolitan cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai, Hyderabad currently ranks ninth. Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy is committed to regaining the city’s leading position in metro coverage by pushing forward with this expansion plan.

Expected Benefits

The Phase 2 expansion will take Hyderabad’s metro network to a total of 115.4 km, making the metro system more accessible across the city and expected to encourage public transit use. The enhanced metro connectivity is anticipated to ease road congestion, reduce pollution, and create a seamless travel experience for Hyderabad residents.

As Phase 2 progresses, Hyderabad’s metro infrastructure will continue to support the city’s growing population, setting a foundation for sustainable urban mobility that reflects the Telangana government’s forward-looking transport strategy.
