American Honda Motor Co recalls 880,514 vehicles sold across 22 US states and Washington DC over concerns of rear suspension failure and loss of vehicle control.
American Honda Motor Co has recalled 880,514 vehicles in the United States over a rear subframe defect that can cause the rear suspension to fail and the driver to lose control, raising the risk of a crash or injury, the company said on Wednesday.
The recall covers 2016-2022 Honda Pilot SUVs, 2017-2023 Honda Ridgeline pickups, 2019-2023 Honda Passport SUVs and 2014-2020 Acura MDX SUVs sold or registered in 22 states and Washington DC, specifically those in the Northeast and Midwest where road salt is used in winter. Honda estimates that just 1 per cent of the vehicles listed have the defect.
The rear subframe in the affected models may corrode at the suspension mounting points, increasing the risk of loss of handling and control. Honda has had no warranty claims and no reports of injury or death linked to the problem.
The recall is limited to vehicles sold or registered in Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin. The geographic scope reflects the role of road salt in accelerating subframe corrosion, a recurring problem for Honda and other automakers in cold-weather markets.
Honda and Acura dealers will inspect the rear subframe and either install a reinforcement kit or replace subframe components, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on July 7. The NHTSA campaign number for the recall is 26V367000, and Honda’s internal recall codes are AOU and AOT. Vehicle Identification Numbers applicable to the recall will be searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning June 10. Owners may contact Honda customer service at (+1) 888-234-2138.
