On Monday, a significant gathering with the goal of enhancing bilateral relations between India and Singapore will be attended by the Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, the Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal, the Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar, and the Minister of Railways, Electronics, and Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw.
Singapore is set to host the second India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable (ISMR). According to an official statement released on Sunday, the conference will provide the parties a chance to examine a number of areas of their strategic cooperation and find new ways to strengthen and expand it.
A new agenda for bilateral relations between Singapore and India was developed through the ISMR mechanism. Its first meeting took place in September 2022 in New Delhi.
The ministers will engage with the leadership and counterparts in Singapore while they are there. In order to discuss ways to promote bilateral trade and investment, Goyal met with prominent members of the international business community on Sunday in Singapore, including DBS Bank, Temasek Holdings, OMERS, Keppel Infrastructure, and the Owners Forum.
“Took a break after a very productive day in Singapore today, interacting and talking with executives of significant international investment firms that oversee over $500 billion in assets. Goyal stated on X that he had “positioned India as an appealing investment destination and invited these multinationals to be a part of our development journey.”
For India, Singapore has been a significant source of foreign direct investment (FDI). With expected FDI inflows of $11.77 billion to India in FY24, Singapore emerged as the leading source of FDI. Between April 2000 and March 2024, Singapore contributed a total of approximately $159.94 billion in foreign direct investment.
With $35.61 billion in overall commerce with Singapore in FY24, Singapore ranked as India’s sixth-largest trading partner worldwide. About 29% of India’s overall commerce with the 10 Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries is accounted for by this.
