Delhi CM approves incentive scheme to promote scrapping of old vehicles | Auto

In a progressive move towards reducing pollution and promoting eco-friendly vehicles, the Delhi government has introduced a new scheme offering 10-20% tax rebates to buyers of new vehicles who choose to scrap their old ones. This incentive, approved by Chief Minister Atishi, is aimed at promoting the removal of old, polluting vehicles from the roads, encouraging the adoption of cleaner, upgraded vehicles.

Incentive Scheme for Scrapping Old Vehicles

As part of the new initiative, the Delhi government will provide a rebate on motor vehicle tax to individuals who scrap their old vehicles and purchase new ones within a three-year period. The scheme is expected to be officially notified soon, offering vehicle owners significant savings when they choose to upgrade to less-polluting models.

Rebate Structure for Different Vehicle Categories

The rebate percentage varies depending on the type of vehicle purchased:

20% rebate on the purchase of non-commercial CNG and petrol vehicles.

15% rebate on the purchase of commercial CNG and petrol vehicles.

10% rebate on the purchase of diesel vehicles.

This incentive aims to encourage the switch to CNG and petrol vehicles, which are less harmful to the environment compared to diesel vehicles. The policy is aligned with global efforts to reduce vehicular emissions by phasing out older models and introducing those with upgraded emission standards.

How to Avail the Tax Rebate

To benefit from this scheme, vehicle owners will need to follow a simple process:

Scrap the old vehicle at a registered scrapping facility.

Obtain a certificate of deposit from the facility upon scrapping the vehicle.

Present the certificate at the time of registration of the new vehicle to avail the tax rebate.

It is essential to note that the new vehicle must be purchased within three years of scrapping the old one to claim the rebate.

Why This Policy Matters

Delhi, like many other urban areas, faces significant air pollution challenges, with old vehicles being a major contributor. This new tax rebate scheme is designed to incentivize the retirement of outdated, polluting vehicles and their replacement with newer, cleaner models. By offering financial incentives, the government hopes to speed up the transition to a less-polluting vehicle fleet, ultimately leading to cleaner air and a healthier environment for all residents.

A Step Towards Cleaner Air and Healthier Living

This initiative is just one part of Delhi’s ongoing efforts to improve air quality and reduce the carbon footprint of its transport sector. By encouraging the scrapping of old vehicles and providing rebates on the purchase of newer models, the government is promoting the use of environmentally friendly vehicles that comply with modern emission standards.

If you’re considering purchasing a new vehicle, now is the time to take advantage of this scheme. Not only will you be contributing to a greener Delhi, but you’ll also benefit from significant tax savings.
