Big Auto-Taxi Strike In Delhi-NCR On August 22-23, Union Says ‘They’re Getting Affected Due to Ola, Uber’

The Delhi-NCR car and taxi driver unions have announced a strike starting on Thursday in protest against app-based cab firms Ola and Uber, which is expected to cause significant transportation disruptions for the nation’s capital for the next two days. Over 15 unions in the Delhi-NCR are organising the August 22–23 strike by auto and taxi drivers.

The auto-taxi unions issued the strike call in response to the negative impact that app-based taxi services have had on their income, which has resulted in a considerable decrease in earnings.

The Unions asserted that in spite of their worries, the federal government and the state governments have done nothing to resolve the matter.

Why Did The Strike Happen?

We have been writing to agencies and governments about firms like Ola and Uber for a number of years, but nobody has responded. These enterprises work as a game of contributions, with the government also involved. These corporations provide their side, and the government presents its side. News agency IANS reported Kishan Verma, the president of the Delhi Auto Taxi Transport Congress Union, as stating, “We demand an end to this game.”

“We need to address the issue of auto and taxi driver employment, which is being impacted or eliminated. Along with the trade in booze and drugs, private cab services like Ola and Uber are participating in smuggling. We are going to strike in order to address these problems. The group has decided to cease all car and taxi services in Delhi NCR on August 22 and 23, he continued.

The head of the Delhi Auto Taxi Transport Congress Union added that ride-hailing service providers receive a 45 percent commission. “Nothing is being given to us. On the roads are e-rickshaws and bikes with customised license plates. Where will drivers of cars and taxis go? We anticipate a government-issued app and a ban on these businesses,” he stated.

He stated that during the strike, autos, kaali-peeli taxis, economic radio taxis, and taxis with all-India tourist permits would not be visible on Delhi’s roadways.
