New Delhi, October 9, 2026: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has initiated the installation of Retrofit Emission Control Devices (RECDs) on 25 diesel generator (DG) sets deployed along Package IV of the Dwarka Expressway to strengthen emission control measures and support efforts to improve air quality in Delhi-NCR.
The 8.7-km Package IV stretch connects Basai to the Kherki Dhaula and Delhi-Gurugram Expressway cloverleaf intersection. The initiative aims to ensure compliance with air quality regulations governing the operation of DG sets in the National Capital Region.
Initiative to support air pollution control measures
The installation is being undertaken in accordance with directions issued by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) regarding the use of diesel generator sets in Delhi-NCR.
The region experiences severe air pollution during the winter months, when restrictions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) may be enforced. The emission control initiative is intended to strengthen pollution mitigation measures during this period.
The RECDs will be installed on DG sets used for expressway lighting and other associated operations. The work will include installation, testing and commissioning of the devices along with comprehensive maintenance support.
GPS-tagged photographs for compliance verification
NHAI has specified that GPS-tagged photographs of the RECD installations at each DG set location will be maintained for verification and compliance purposes.
The documentation is intended to support monitoring of the installation process and ensure that the emission control systems are deployed at the designated locations.
Focus on sustainable highway operations
The initiative forms part of NHAI’s broader efforts to integrate environmental protection measures into the construction and operation of National Highway projects, particularly those located in Delhi-NCR.
By equipping DG sets required for essential highway operations with emission control systems, the authority aims to strengthen compliance with applicable environmental regulations while supporting the functioning of expressway infrastructure.
The initiative also highlights the importance of incorporating air pollution mitigation measures into critical transport infrastructure in regions that face seasonal air quality challenges.
