Noida : A tragic incident in Noida’s Sector 94 has shaken the city after a student drowned in a water-filled pit near a construction site. The incident occurred on Wednesday under the jurisdiction of Sector 126 police station, raising serious questions about safety measures and administrative oversight.

What happened?

According to police, four students from Amity University visited an abandoned construction site near the Supernova building in Sector 94 after their exams. The group had gone there for a casual outing. During this time, one of the students, Harshit Bhatt, a resident of Indirapuram in Ghaziabad, entered a nearby water-filled pit to bathe. Unaware of the depth, he suddenly slipped into deeper water and began to drown. His friends attempted to rescue him immediately but were unsuccessful. They then alerted authorities by calling Dial 112.

Rescue operation and confirmation of death

Police and emergency response teams reached the spot promptly. With the help of local divers, the student was pulled out of the water and rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Police confirmed that other students who entered the water in an attempt to save him were safely rescued and are in stable condition.

Serious questions over safety lapses

The incident has once again brought attention to glaring safety lapses at construction sites in Noida. Open pits filled with water, lack of barricading, and absence of warning signs continue to pose risks to public safety. Residents have repeatedly raised concerns about such hazardous spots, especially in areas with ongoing or abandoned construction activity.

Questions are being raised

  • Why was the water-filled pit left open and unsecured?
  • Were there any barricades or warning signs at the site?
  • Why has the authority failed to act despite previous incidents?
  • How did students gain easy access to a potentially dangerous site?

Investigation underway

Police officials stated that a detailed investigation is ongoing to examine all aspects of the incident, including possible negligence in maintaining safety at the construction site. This incident highlights not just a tragic loss of life, but also systemic gaps in urban safety management that demand immediate attention and corrective action.

Social voices are roaring

Concerns are also growing over the overall state of civic infrastructure and emergency response systems. From unsafe construction zones to gaps in monitoring and enforcement, residents increasingly feel that essential safeguards are not being prioritised.

Social voices have stressed that the concept of a smart city must go beyond infrastructure and branding. Public safety, timely intervention and strict accountability should form the core of governance. Without these, incidents like the Sector 94 drowning will continue to raise uncomfortable questions about whether the system is truly working for its citizens.

There is a growing demand for a transparent investigation, clear assignment of responsibility, and immediate corrective measures to ensure that such preventable tragedies are not repeated.
