A user can now save map data locally on their wristwatch for navigation purposes without requiring an internet connection by using Google Maps in offline mode on a few Wear OS capable smartwatches.
The public beta version of Google Maps for Wear OS is currently rolling out offline support, according to 9to5Google. Users purportedly notice a banner saying, “Offline maps on the phone are auto-downloaded to the watch,” after updating the Google Maps software. A new “Offline maps” page has emerged in the most recent Google Maps public beta, and it sits above the “Settings” page at the bottom of the main menu.
The watch app syncs previously saved offline areas on the phone and downloads maps for the user’s local area automatically. Like on Android, it also lets users remove maps with a single swipe and displays how much space they take up. According to Google, when the watch is charging and linked to Wi-Fi, it automatically syncs.
Google shows a sliced cloud icon next to the time in the map view while it is in offline mode. Alongside the microphone for voice input and the new “Search & go” tile that shows up on Home and Work shortcuts, comes this feature. Additionally, users can skip the main feed and enter map view with a single press. Furthermore, by touching the newly added “Offline maps” button and choosing “Manage on Phone,” users of the smartwatch will now have the ability to manage downloaded maps.
Version 11.140.0701.W of Google Maps for Wear OS for the Pixel Watch 2 has this upgrade as well, since 9to5Google reports that they are also a part of the public Google Maps beta.
