Gmail, the email client from Google, is getting a number of AI features. The latest feature being offered for the Gmail app on iOS and Android is “Summarise this email”. For present, only users who have paid for access can utilise this function. According to reports, the tool saves users time by summarising lengthy talks and showing highlights and a recap. A Google Workspace updates post was used to announce the launch of this functionality. In the coming weeks, Summarise for iOS and Android will be completely accessible after a broad rollout.
Gmail: How the summarise email feature functions
The Gemini-powered “Summarise this email” button will appear beneath the subject line. 9To5Google claims that the summarization function button only shows up in emails with two or more responses; it is not present in emails with just one thread. After a few seconds of pressing the button, a page with highlights and bullet points glides up. After the release of Gmail Q&A, there may be space at the bottom of the sheet for prompts or follow-up questions. Currently, there isn’t any. Users can swipe down on the expandable sheet to get the most recent summaries. Users have the option to rate the summaries based on how useful they felt and to copy the provided recap.
A similar function named “Help me write” was previously available in Gmail. Contextual Smart Reply and Gmail Q&A will also be released by Google.
Users of Google Workspace with the Gemini Business and Enterprise add-on, the Gemini Education and Education Premium add-on, or the Google One AI Premium subscription have been able to access Gemini side panels using Gmail. With online Gmail, the Gemini side panel powered by 1.5 Pro asks questions, gathers information from emails in the inbox and files in Google Drive, summarises email threads, assists in composing emails, and offers responses to email threads.
