UP has approved four new expressway projects worth over Rs 47,000 crore. Here’s how the new roads could transform travel, trade and real estate

UP News: Once completed, the four projects are expected to significantly strengthen Uttar Pradesh’s rapidly expanding expressway network, improving mobility for commuters while supporting trade, tourism and long-term regional development.
UP New Expressways: Road travel across Uttar Pradesh is set for a major overhaul after the state Cabinet approved four new expressway projects worth more than Rs 47,000 crore. The ambitious infrastructure push is expected to cut travel time, improve freight movement, strengthen links between eastern and western Uttar Pradesh and unlock fresh opportunities for industry, logistics and real estate.
The projects, approved during a Cabinet meeting chaired by UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, include the Vindhya Expressway, the Vindhya-Purvanchal Spur Link, the Agra-Lucknow-Purvanchal Link Expressway, and the Agra-Lucknow-Ganga Link Expressway.
Together, the projects will create a more integrated expressway network connecting major highways across the state and providing smoother road access from the Delhi region to the Bihar border.
Vindhya Expressway To Link Prayagraj And Sonbhadra
The Cabinet has approved the alignment of the 333-km Vindhya Expressway, a six-lane access-controlled greenfield corridor that can be expanded to eight lanes in the future.
According to reports, the expressway will begin at Sonwar Tehsil in Prayagraj, where the Ganga Expressway ends, and pass through Bhadohi, Mirzapur, Varanasi and Chandauli before terminating near National Highway-39 in Sonbhadra.
The route is strategically important as Sonbhadra is Uttar Pradesh’s only district bordering Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Bihar. Once operational, the corridor is expected to become a preferred route for heavy vehicles travelling to these states, reducing travel time and fuel costs.
Project Cost And Land Acquisition
The Vindhya Expressway has an estimated project cost of Rs 26,315 crore, including taxes. While the core construction cost is estimated at around Rs 22,400 crore, the higher overall estimate includes land acquisition expenses.
Officials said around 4,614 hectares of land will be required for the project, although some estimates place the requirement for the main carriageway at about 2,800 hectares. Land acquisition has already begun in Prayagraj, with surveys under way in Soraon, Phulpur and Handia tehsils.
The project had received in-principle approval during the Cabinet meeting held in Prayagraj during Maha Kumbh 2025, and has now received final approval.
Vindhya-Purvanchal Spur Link To Connect Three Expressways
The Cabinet has also cleared the 117-km Vindhya-Purvanchal Spur Link (Option-1), a six-lane greenfield expressway estimated to cost Rs 9,039 crore, including taxes.
The new corridor will reportedly connect Mirzapur to Ghazipur via Chandauli, passing through Varanasi, and will integrate the Ganga Expressway, Vindhya Expressway and Purvanchal Expressway into a single network.
The project will pass through around 135 villages, require between 1,731 and 2,800 hectares of land, and is expected to be completed within three years.
Officials said the link road will significantly improve connectivity for people travelling between Ghazipur, Mau, Ballia, Mirzapur and Sonbhadra.
Two More Link Expressways Cleared
In addition to the eastern UP projects, the Cabinet approved the final Request for Proposal (RFP) for two more link expressways connecting the Agra-Lucknow Expressway with other major corridors.
The first is a 50.98-km Agra-Lucknow-Purvanchal Link Expressway, which will connect the Agra-Lucknow and Purvanchal expressways. The six-lane access-controlled greenfield corridor, expandable to eight lanes, will be built under the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) model at an estimated cost of Rs 4,775.84 crore.
The second project is the 90.84-km Agra-Lucknow-Ganga Link Expressway, which will connect the Agra-Lucknow Expressway with the Ganga Expressway via Farrukhabad. It will also be built as a six-lane corridor, expandable to eight lanes, at an estimated cost of Rs 7,488.74 crore.
Together, the two link expressways represent an investment of over Rs 12,264 crore.
Construction To Begin Soon
The state government said the tendering process for selecting developers will begin shortly. The selected contractors will be required to complete construction within 36 months, followed by five years of maintenance after the roads become operational.
Officials said the projects are aimed at creating a seamless expressway grid across Uttar Pradesh, enabling faster and safer long-distance travel while reducing congestion, fuel consumption and logistics costs.
Major Boost For Trade And Real Estate
Beyond improving connectivity, the new expressways are expected to drive economic activity across eastern Uttar Pradesh.
Districts such as Mirzapur, Sonbhadra, Bhadohi and Chandauli, which have historically lagged behind due to limited transport infrastructure, are likely to witness increased investment from industries and developers.
Property experts expect early demand around major interchange points, particularly in Mirzapur, where both the Vindhya Expressway and the Vindhya-Purvanchal Spur Link intersect. Areas around Phaphamau, Soraon and Handia in Prayagraj are also expected to see increased residential demand as they become connected to both the Ganga and Vindhya expressways.
In Sonbhadra, improved connectivity is expected to support the expansion of warehousing, logistics parks, hotels and industrial development, complementing the district’s existing thermal power plants, coal reserves and industrial hubs at Robertsganj and Obra.
Meanwhile, Ghazipur and Chandauli are also expected to benefit from better access to the Purvanchal Expressway, improving connectivity to Lucknow, Delhi and other major economic centres.
Once completed, the four projects are expected to significantly strengthen Uttar Pradesh’s rapidly expanding expressway network, improving mobility for commuters while supporting trade, tourism and long-term regional development.
