UP govt hikes scholarship amount for SC, ST, includes children of ‘safaikarmis’ too

LUCKNOW: In a good news, the UP government has increased the amount by Rs 500 for students from the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (SC/ST) communities under the Pre-Matric Scholarship scheme (classes 9 and 10) administered by the Department of Social Welfare. According to departmental officials, SC/ST students will now receive Rs 3,500 annually, up from the previous Rs 3,000. Eligibility for the scholarship is for children aged between 12 and 20 years, with class 10 SC/ST students eligible if they score a minimum of 50% marks.
The new guidelines have also included children of ‘safaikarmis’ (those engaged in manual scavenging) to incentivize school attendance. Additionally, age limits have been established: those seeking pre-matric scholarships should be between 12 and 20 years, while those applying for post-matric scholarships (above class 10) should be under 40 years of age, as stated by an official. Students admitted through management quotas are now ineligible for the scholarship.
Furthermore, students pursuing two graduate courses are now eligible for the scholarship. Previously, students pursuing a bachelor’s course like BA or BSc were eligible, but if they pursued another graduate course, such as a non-technical one like BTech, they were ineligible for the scholarship for the second time. An official stated, “We have now provided flexibility to students in accessing the scholarship, with the only requirement being a minimum attendance of 75% in school and college.”
Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Social Welfare, Asim Arun, remarked, “In our efforts to assist all students from needy families, we have decided to increase the scholarship amount. We have also broadened the definition of eligible families, aligning with our ‘Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas’ policies.”
