SSC Junior Engineer Exam 2023: How many vacancies; What are the job prospects?



The Staff Selection Commission – SSC Junior Engineer (JE) exam is considered to be one of the most competitive exams in India, with nearly 5 to 6 lakh candidates appearing for the exam each year. In 2023, it is expected that close to 5 lakh aspirants will take the exam.
The exam is held in two stages: Paper 1 and Paper 2. For 2023, paper 1 is being held from October 9 to October 11, 2023, and paper 2 is scheduled to take place on December 4, 2023.
The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) is one of India’s largest recruitment boards. SSC undertakes recruitment for various domains across different government departments. The most appeared exams that are undertaken by the SSC are SSC-CGL, SSC-CHSL, and SSC-MTS.
SSC JE 2023 vacancies
The commission, earlier this year advertised for the SSC JE exam, for which it advertised a total of 1,324 vacancies across different departments.

SSC JE 2023 selection procedure
The selection process for SSC JE 2023 consists of three stages:
Stage 1 consists of the Paper 1 exam in CBT mode. In the first stage, candidates take the Paper 1 Exam, which is a General Ability Test (GAT) and is the same for all applicants. This exam comprises 200 multiple-choice questions covering the following subjects:

  • General Intelligence and Reasoning
  • General Awareness
  • Quantitative Aptitude
  • English Comprehension

Stage 2 consists of the Paper 2 exam also in CBT mode. The second stage involves the Paper 2 Exam, which is subject-specific and varies depending on the engineering discipline chosen by the candidates. It contains 300 multiple-choice questions related to:

  • Civil Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering

There is a negative marking in both Paper 1 and Paper 2. For every incorrect answer in Paper 1, 0.25 marks are deducted, and in Paper 2, 1 mark is deducted.
Lastly, stage 3 is dedicated to document verification and does not include any aspect of assessment.
Candidates who pass both Paper 1 and Paper 2 proceed to the Document Verification stage. Original documents of candidates are cross-checked against the self-attested copies they submitted during the online application process.
Successful candidates who clear all three stages of the selection process will be appointed as Junior Engineers in various departments of the central government.

  • Scheme Execution: Junior Engineers execute organizational schemes in accordance with requirements.
  • Accounting: Their responsibilities include managing stocks, billing, and conducting cost analyses for projects.
  • Assisting Higher Authorities: Junior Engineers support higher authorities in line with department or organization guidelines.
