Why is Hariyali Teej Celebrated?
Hariyali Teej is a cherished monsoon festival, especially in North India, dedicated to the reunion of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. As per Hindu mythology, it marks the day when Shiva finally accepted Parvati as his consort after years of her meditation and devotion. The festival symbolises eternal love, devotion, and marital bliss.
Women observe fasts, pray for the health and longevity of their husbands, and seek blessings for a harmonious married life. The lush greenery of the season (referred to as Hariyali) adds a natural beauty and freshness to the festivities.
Tips to Get Ready for Hariyali Teej
Traditional Attire: Dress up in green-colored ethnic wear like sarees, lehengas, or salwar suits – green symbolises prosperity and nature.
Mehendi (Henna): Apply intricate mehendi designs on hands and feet a day before – it’s believed to bring good luck and enhance the festive spirit.
Jewellery & Bangles: Opt for glass or metal green bangles and traditional jewellery to complete your Teej look.
Makeup & Hair: Go for a subtle yet festive makeup look – with green eye shadow or a hint of gold shimmer. Style your hair in a braid or bun adorned with flowers.
Teej Puja Thali: Prepare your puja thali with sindoor, flowers, ghewar sweets, and an idol or image of Shiva-Parvati for the evening rituals.
Swing Decor: If possible, decorate a swing (jhula) with flowers and use it during celebration — it’s a traditional highlight of Teej.
