Pixel 8 Pro: Google will offer 7 years of updates for Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro: Why it matters

Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro are official and the company brought several ‘firsts’ with the latest generation of smartphones. Apart from the new AI trickery in cameras, Google announced that it is providing seven years of software support for Pixel 8 series. These upgrades include Android OS upgrades, security updates and regular Feature Drops.
For Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro users, this means that their smartphones will be supported till 2030. Notably, no major smartphone brand offers this level of support and longevity. Samsung, until now, had led in this regard as it has been offering 5 years of software support for its smartphones.
“This makes these phones a more sustainable smartphone choice, because they’ll be secure and perform well for seven years,” Google highlighted.
Android OS updates and Feature Drops
While Google’s Android OS powers millions of smartphones, it treats Pixel with exclusive features, updates and fixes. The company says that providing consistent security fixes and improvements help keep users and their data secure.
“Extending our commitment with Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro was a natural progression for us, especially as we’re seeing people use their Pixel phones longer and longer. To make this possible, we’ve been working to secure long-term commitments from partner teams, and put the necessary testing infrastructure in place,” Google said.
It also noted that security updates, bug fixes and feature updates won’t roll out on a specific day each month, instead it will deploy updates as soon as they’ve completed the necessary tests.
An example of this is Feature Drops, which roll out multiple times a year and include feature enhancements in areas like safety, security, camera and more. Google also said that it will extend hardware support and make parts available for seven years to match the software commitment.
