MMRDA has invited fresh bids for a consultant to finalise the Detailed Project Report for Mumbai Metro Line 14.

One of Mumbai’s most ambitious metro projects is back on track — after a false start, a scrapped Italian contract, and a funding dead-end.

What Is Metro Line 14?

Metro Line 14 will be a 43.69 km corridor connecting Kanjurmarg in the west to Badlapur in the east — making it one of the longest lines in Mumbai’s expanding metro network. For the lakhs of commuters who battle the overcrowded Central Railway suburban line daily, this could be a game-changer.

What’s The Latest?

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has invited fresh bids for a consultant to finalise the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the line. This comes after a series of setbacks:

December 2025: MMRDA terminated its contract with Italian firm M/s Metro Milano after IIT Bombay flagged serious concerns in its review of the feasibility report, with key technical parameters needing revision

Earlier in 2026: MMRDA explored a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model to fund the project, but dropped the plan after receiving no response from private bidders

Now: A fresh consultant is being brought in to address IIT Bombay’s technical concerns, revisit the project’s parameters, and suggest alternative funding models

Why Should Mumbai Commuters Care?

The Kanjurmarg–Badlapur stretch covers some of the most congested and underserved corridors in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Towns like Dombivli, Ambernath, and Badlapur have seen explosive population growth with limited fast transit options. A dedicated metro line on this route could:

• Drastically cut commute times for residents of Thane and Kalyan-Dombivli belt

• Ease pressure off the heavily burdened Central Railway suburban network

• Open up connectivity between the eastern suburbs and key metro interchange hubs like Kanjurmarg

What Happens Next?

Once the new consultant is appointed, the revised DPR will need to be prepared, reviewed, and approved before construction can begin. Given the project’s history of delays, timelines remain uncertain — but the fresh bidding process signals that MMRDA is serious about reviving it.
