A major shift in urban transport planning in Kalyan, Maharashtra, on the cards as authorities have decided to construct the Mumbai metro corridor using a double-decker model, a move expected to significantly ease traffic congestion and reshape the region’s road network.
The decision was reviewed at a high-level meeting held at the office of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). The meeting was attended by Dr. Shrikant Shinde, Member of Parliament, MMRDA Commissioner Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, Additional Commissioner Ashwin Mudgal and other senior officials. Key traffic and infrastructure projects in the region were discussed in detail.
Under the proposed double-decker corridor model, the infrastructure will be built in three layers; a road at ground level, a flyover above it, and the metro line on the top. Officials said the integrated structure is designed to optimise space in congested urban areas while accommodating future traffic growth.
The plan includes several metro corridors such as the Kalyan-Taloja Metro Line 12, Kanjurmarg-Badlapur Metro Line 14 and the Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan Metro Line 5. In addition, proposals have been made to develop key road corridors as double-decker routes, including the Kalyan-Ulhasnagar-Ambernath-Chikhlole stretch via Durgadi, the Shilphata–Ranjanoli elevated road, and the Valdhuni-Nevali elevated road.
The meeting also focused on civic infrastructure in Ulhasnagar. Officials raised a demand of nearly Rs 100 crore to complete the remaining cement-concrete road works across the city. The discussion was attended by Mayor Ashwini Nikam, Deputy Mayor Amar Lund and other representatives.
Authorities also directed that residents affected by metro construction be temporarily shifted to houses under the Basic Services for Urban Poor (BSUP) scheme. Suggestions were made to provide permanent housing to displaced residents and alternative shops to affected traders under the proposed three-cluster redevelopment plan.
Officials further instructed that land acquisition required for U-Type and Malang Road projects in Kalyan East be completed on priority. Work on the tunnel at Katai Naka along the Airoli-Katai Freeway was also asked to be accelerated.
As part of the proposed expansion of Metro Line 5, new routes are being considered from Chikhlole to Badlapur and from Durgadi to Titwala. Meanwhile, Metro Line 12 could also be extended from Shilphata to Thane via Kalwa and Mumbra.
Once completed, the integrated projects are expected to streamline traffic movement and strengthen connectivity across Kalyan, Dombivli, Ulhasnagar, Ambernath and Badlapur, significantly improving the region’s overall transportation network.
