Lok Sabha elections: Over 300 events conducted in Noida to improve voter turnout

Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation in Noida has organised over 300 programmes in preparation for the Lok Sabha elections. Aiming to increase the number of voters in Noida, the events included a marathon, a cyclothon, rallies featuring only women, and drives headed by youth, transgender individuals, and persons with disabilities. “To raise awareness, we have conducted campaigns in markets, movie theaters, bus stops, and auto stands, as well as reached out to students in schools and colleges,” SVEEP officer Shailendra Bahadur Singh stated.

Voting booths will be installed inside several of the larger group housing societies in Noida and Greater Noida for the first time this year. We have made contact with people who live in villages, communities, and sectors,” he continued.

‘Nukkad natak’ and ‘prabhat pheri’ were among the events that were conducted at different sites to encourage people to exercise their right to vote, according to SVEEP officer Singh.

The Election Commission’s main initiative, Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP), aims to increase voter literacy. The cities of Noida and Greater Noida make up the Gautam Buddh Nagar constituency in Noida. Thus far, the Lok Sabha elections have seen low voter turnout.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the constituency achieved a voter turnout of 60.47 percent; in the 2014 elections, it was 60.38 percent; and in the 2009 polls, it was an embarrassing 48 percent.

The constituency’s voter turnout was below the 67.40% national average in 2019, 66% in 2014, and 58% in 2009, according to data cited by PTI from the Election Commission.

Manish Kumar Verma, the Gautam Buddh Nagar district’s district magistrate and election officer, told PTI that he had made all the necessary preparations at the voting places and anticipated a high voter turnout in 2024. Here, a broad awareness campaign has been launched.
