Noida: Rumours of a possible lockdown in India have created panic among industrial units in Noida, leading to fears of labour shortages and disruption in production. The speculation gained traction after Prime Minister Narendra Modi referred to global supply chain disruptions during his speech in the Lok Sabha, drawing comparisons between the Covid-19 pandemic and the ongoing geopolitical tensions involving Iran, Israel and the United States.
While the Prime Minister’s remarks were intended to highlight preparedness and resilience, sections of social media misinterpreted them, triggering widespread searches for “Lockdown in India” and fuelling unnecessary panic.
Factories report labour shortage as workers hesitate to return
The impact of these rumours is already visible across Noida’s industrial belt. Several factory owners claim that labour availability has dropped by nearly 30 per cent, with some estimating it could rise to 50 per cent if the situation continues.
Industry insiders say the timing has worsened the situation. Many workers had already travelled to their hometowns due to festivals like Holi, Navratri and Eid. Now, amid fears of another lockdown and ongoing concerns about gas shortages, many are reluctant to return.
Employers have reportedly started offering incentives such as electric irons, fans and induction cooktops to attract workers back to factories.
Fuel price hike adds to anxiety
The situation intensified further after private oil company Nayara Energy increased petrol prices by ₹5 per litre and diesel by ₹3 per litre. This has reinforced public fears of a broader price rise, despite government assurances.
Residents and workers alike are worried that rising fuel costs, coupled with supply disruptions due to the West Asia crisis, could strain household budgets and industrial operations.
What did PM Modi actually say?
During his address in Parliament, Narendra Modi recalled how global supply chains were disrupted during the COVID-19 pandemic and drew parallels with current geopolitical tensions. However, he clearly stated that India had previously shielded farmers and citizens from global shocks and would continue to do so.
He urged citizens to remain patient, united and prepared to face challenges calmly. Notably, he did not mention any possibility of a lockdown.
Reality check: No lockdown on the horizon
Despite the rumours, there is no official indication that India is heading toward a lockdown. Unlike the Covid-19 situation in 2020, when restrictions were imposed to control the spread of infection, the current geopolitical tensions do not warrant such measures.
Government sources maintain that India has sufficient oil reserves for approximately 60 days and is actively diversifying imports beyond Gulf nations to ensure stability. Steps are also being taken to tackle LPG shortages, including action against black marketing and promotion of PNG connections.
Industrial impact could worsen if rumours persist
Export-oriented industries in Noida are particularly concerned. Business owners say delays in labour return and rising operational costs could lead to missed deadlines, increased production costs and potential order cancellations.
If workers don’t return in time, it won’t just affect factories but also the broader economy.

Appeal to residents: Don’t fall for misinformation
At present, all discussions around a nationwide lockdown are baseless and misleading. Authorities and industry stakeholders are urging residents to rely on verified information and avoid spreading panic.
Misinformation, if unchecked, could create unnecessary economic disruption and hardship for both industries and workers.
