A train ride through thick forests, river breezes, and possible wildlife sightings is now back on track. Indian Railways has revived a long-awaited DEMU service that reconnects travellers to one of Karnataka’s most scenic and historically rich rail routes, passing through the lush landscapes of the Kali Tiger Reserve. Whether you are a daily commuter or a nature lover planning a getaway, this journey promises views that turn the ride itself into an experience.

A long-awaited railway service connecting Alnavar Junction and Dandeli is set to restart, promising travellers one of the most scenic train journeys in the region. Passing through dense forest stretches and running alongside the Kali River, the revived route is expected to strengthen tourism and improve connectivity in Uttara Kannada.

The new Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) train service is being introduced after several years. Minister of State for Railways and Jal Shakti, V. Muraleedharan, will inaugurate the service and flag off the special train. The inauguration of Dandeli Railway Station and Train No. 07371 is scheduled for February 7, 2026.

Boost for Tourism and Local Connectivity

The train service fulfils a long-standing demand from residents and commuters. It is expected to benefit students, daily travellers, and tourists visiting the Dandeli region.

One of the biggest highlights of this railway route is its natural setting. The train passes through thick evergreen and deciduous forests, offering passengers scenic views throughout the journey. Since parts of the track run close to the Kali Tiger Reserve, travellers may spot wildlife such as elephants, deer, and several bird species.

A Route with Historic Roots

The railway line carries historical significance. It was originally built by the British in 1918 to transport timber logs. Today, it stands as both a heritage route and a growing tourism attraction.

As the train approaches Dandeli, passengers are welcomed by the cool breeze from the Kali River and scenic riverbank views. The region’s pleasant climate, green hills, and rows of teak trees add to the charm, making the journey as memorable as the destination itself.
