Waitlisted ticket? Indian Railways’ VIKALP scheme may shift you to another train at no extra cost — if seats are available. Here’s how it works and when it can help
Typically, passengers with waitlisted tickets must wait until the final reservation chart is prepared to know whether their ticket is confirmed. If it is not, travel plans fall apart. Under the VIKALP scheme, however, passengers may be allotted vacant seats on alternative trains running on the same route if seats are available. The option is available while booking tickets through the IRCTC website or mobile app. Passengers must select the ‘VIKALP’ option at the time of booking. It applies only to waitlisted tickets, and eligible passengers may receive an alternative train allotment 12 to 24 hours before departure. In some cases, passengers may also be offered the option to travel a day or two later, subject to availability and consent. Importantly, no extra charges are levied if a seat is allotted on a different train under the scheme. If a passenger chooses to cancel after being reassigned, they can apply for a refund as per railway rules.Opting for VIKALP does not guarantee confirmation; allotment depends entirely on seat availability in other trains. However, for waitlisted passengers facing uncertain travel plans, it offers a practical and cost-free alternative that could turn a cancelled trip into a confirmed journey.

For millions of people, the railways remain the most affordable and practical way to travel long distances. Train journeys are especially convenient for families and elderly passengers. But securing a confirmed ticket often requires planning weeks in advance. While Tatkal bookings offer last-minute options, confirmation is never guaranteed, particularly during peak seasons.
