Irregular periods
Dr Rakhi Gupta, Additional Director – Obstetrics & Gynaecology Department, Fortis Hospital, Greater Noida shares information. She explains Irregular periods are because of our lifestyle. Irregular periods can happen at any age. Be it a girl who just started her period, a woman in her reproductive stage or a woman who is near her menopause. Treatment is different for each one. Girls who just started need not worry. For young girls in their starting of 2-3 years, it is normal to have irregular periods and they should not get worried. It is also normal to miss the periods for 2-3 years of puberty. But if the irregular periods continue, they are not developing the pattern, they should be looked at and should go for a check-up with the gynaecologist.
In the same way, a lady in the reproductive age group, if she has irregular periods there is likely to be a hormonal disbalance. If it continues happening, it cannot be taken lightly. Ultrasound is a basic thing that can be done and the doctor will suggest getting the hormonal tests done. Also, the OC pills, which are birth control pills, will regularise the periods. Sometimes, that is not the case, that time the gyno will tell you to do a certain cleaning of the uterus which is called DNC, and after diagnosis, the medicine is given.
However, if the irregular bleeding is happening near the menopause, it is okay but every time irregular bleeding near the menopause is not the normal menopause, it needs to be checked. Ultrasound should be done and the patient should be given the medicine so that things get clear and can be taken care of.
Birth control methods
Dr. Rakhi Gupta informs Birth control methods are not only important for the newlyweds, but the society where we live, westernization is happening, and all those who are into physical relationships should Know contraception before they get into it.
As the boy and girl grow, their hormones are raging but nobody is telling them the right way to go about it.
There are two ways of contraception. 1- Permanent 2- Interval method.
Young people who have not finished their family will go for the interval method and those who have completed will go for the Permanent method, it is up to them to go for the permanent method or not they can continue with the temporary method too.
1- Condoms
2- Female condoms
3- Oral contraceptive pills, which need to be taken regularly
Ipill is a big NO-NO
Ipill contains a large number of high-level hormones that can cause disturbance in the periods and can cause other hormonal disorders.
Ipill should only be reserved as an emergency contraceptive pill where either the regular contraception has failed, like a condom has burst or sexual assault has happened, they can use the pill to stop the pregnancy.
Ipill is not for regular sexual activity
They should use regular contraceptive pills, they are so much better for them because they will help in contraception, they will regularise the cycle, and they correct anaemia, girls suffering from anaemia or heavy bleeding take oral contraceptive pills and everything regularise, which helps in later ovarian cancer will not happen.
Multiload Method to control birth
The gynaecologist inserts a device in the uterus. 3 years, 5 years, 10 years IUCD which can be used according to the need.
Permanent method
In the permanent method, Laparoscopically or by the open method, females’ fallopian tubes are cut so that they cannot give birth.
‘Birth control is not only a female’s task’
Dr says Contraception is all about a couple. We must not forget men, they also can use contraception. Condoms not only protect birth control, but they also keep one safe from infections and sexually transmitted diseases.
The permanent method is also for men
Vasectomy is an easy process and it does not affect the manhood, it is good for the couples if the woman is not fit for operation. Vasectomy is easier than Tubectomy or tubal sterilization.
Usage of Trapic in heavy bleeding
Trapic is safe to be taken once in a while, but it should not become a habit. In case of bleeding, one or two cycles is ok, but then one must see a doctor. The doctor will find out why the excess bleeding is coming out and will find the root cause of the problem.
Painful periods and the ban of Meftal spas
The girls need to understand that the minimal amount of pain is normal. There are many normal things which can be done to ease the pain. Like hot fermentation take some hot kadhas with kali mirch, dalchini, ajwain. Ajwain seeds with salt and sucking it with salt will help in relieving the pain.
Meftal spas are banned, so you can take it once in a while dolo 650 doesn’t make it a habit. In case of uncontrolled pain which is not letting you work, or paralysing you, one must visit a gyno. This can be the ovarian cyst or Endometriosis which is a disease in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus. It can cause severe pain in the pelvis and make it harder to get pregnant. Endometriosis can start at a person’s first menstrual period and last until menopause.
Need to get Cervical cancer, breast cancer screening
Dr Rakhi Gupta says – There are two cancers which are taking the lives of women. One is breast cancer and the other is cervical cancer. They can be detected with the screening. Cervical cancer from 9 years to 26 years, before starting their sexual activity, they should be vaccinated for cervical cancer. Girls above the age of 26 or those who are already in sexual activity, should get the pap smear test done. It is not painful at all.
Signs of cervical cancer
Women who get bleeding after intercourse should see the doctor. Foul-smelling discharge coming out of the vagina should also go to the doctor. These are the red flags for the suspicion of Cervical cancer.
Breast Cancer
Self-examination should be done every month by keeping the hand flat on the breast, The fingers can check every month must see if the lump is occurring or if there is anything wrong with the nipples, a simple test which is an ultrasound of the breast and a mamography should be done. 30 plus are only allowed to undergo mammography. For younger then this, ultrasound is the only option as it is non-invasive, non-radiation to the checkup for lumps in breasts.
