Greater Noida : In a deeply distressing incident, a 19-year-old engineering student from Bihar allegedly died by suicide in Greater Noida, weeks after being caught cheating during an examination. The tragedy has sparked a fresh debate around academic pressure, institutional sensitivity, and student mental health.
The Incident
The young woman, a B.Tech student at Greater Noida Institute of Technology (GNIOT) and a resident of Vaishali district in Bihar, was staying in a rented accommodation in the Beta-2 area of Greater Noida. On July 30, she was found hanging in her room by her roommates. Despite efforts, she could not be saved.
Police said that initial investigations point toward suicide. While no suicide note was recovered from the spot, family members believe she took the extreme step due to the emotional distress caused by a recent cheating accusation.
The Cheating Allegation
On July 9, the student had appeared for an exam at KCC Institute, affiliated with AKTU University. During the exam, invigilators reportedly found a “chit” in her possession. Her answer sheet was confiscated, but she was later allowed to continue the exam with a fresh sheet.
According to her family, the incident left her shaken and humiliated. She had been depressed and anxious ever since, even approaching college officials to express her distress. The family believes that the trauma from the event pushed her over the edge.
Legal Action
An FIR has been lodged against the management of KCC Institute under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (abetment of suicide). Police are probing the matter further and may question college authorities. Her phone, laptop, and personal diaries are being analyzed for additional clues.
Pattern of Student Suicides
This is the second student suicide reported in Greater Noida this month. Earlier in July, a BDS student from Sharda University allegedly died by suicide in her hostel, blaming faculty members for harassment in a note. That case led to the arrest of two professors and a probe by the National Commission for Women.
The Larger Question
The incident highlights the fragile mental health conditions many students face in the high-pressure academic environment. Experts say institutions must not only enforce discipline but also provide emotional and psychological support when students face setbacks or allegations.
