The National Capital Region Transport Corporation’s Managing Director, Shalabh Goel, announced on Wednesday that the Namo Bharat rail link between Delhi and Meerut is set to become fully functional in the near future. At present, passengers can only travel on a 55-kilometre stretch, running from New Ashok Nagar through to Meerut South on the city’s outskirts.
The final 27 kilometres of the route, linking New Ashok Nagar to Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi and stretching from Meerut South to Modipuram in Uttar Pradesh, are scheduled to be opened shortly. The entire 82-km Regional Rapid Transit System underwent successful trial runs earlier in June, clearing the way for its full roll-out by the end of November, reportedly.
What Does The Current Corridor Have?
The currently active corridor accommodates around 60,000 passengers each day, with projections indicating it will remove approximately 1,00,000 cars from the roads once fully operational.
Trains reach a maximum speed of 160 km/h, completing the journey in less than an hour. The entire system aims to significantly cut travel times and alleviate traffic congestion between Delhi and the surrounding urban areas.
NAMO Bharat
The Namo Bharat corridor, which cost over Rs 30,000 crore to construct, marks the first among several planned Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) lines designed to enhance connectivity across the National Capital Region.
Union Power and Housing Minister Manohar Lal Khattar announced last week that the Cabinet will soon approve a section of the Delhi-Alwar corridor. This particular segment covers a distance of 106 kilometres, running from Sarai Kale Khan to the Shahjahanpur–Neemrana–Behror (SNB) complex via Gurgaon.
What Are The Stations
Sarai Kale Khan is the largest station along the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS route. The station comprises six platforms and four tracks dedicated to Namo Bharat services. To accommodate the heavy passenger flow, the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has constructed five entry and exit points alongside numerous staircases, lifts, and escalators. Spanning 215 metres in length, 50 metres in width and rising 15 metres high, the station is equipped with 14 lifts and 18 escalators, ensuring accessibility is provided throughout.
The station will act as the central hub for the three RRTS corridors being constructed in Phase 1: Delhi-Panipat-Karnal, Delhi-SNB-Alwar, and Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut.
