In a significant move aimed at transforming inter-city travel and decongesting the Delhi’s overburdened roads, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari revealed that the Centre is planning to build a high-speed tunnel road connecting Talkatora Stadium in central Delhi to Gurugram.

Gadkari said that a feasibility study for the ambitious project, expected to cost between Rs 30,000 to Rs 40,000 crore, is already underway. Once completed, the tunnel will slash the travel time between Delhi and Gurugram to just 10–15 minutes, a journey that currently takes over 1 hour during peak hours due to chronic traffic jams.

The government is working on a plan to construct a tunnel between Talkatora Stadium and Gurugram. The project is currently in the research and study phase. A consultant has been appointed to examine its feasibility, Gadkari told reporters.

The proposed tunnel is part of the government’s broader vision to modernise Delhi’s infrastructure and curb rising vehicular congestion and pollution levels. According to Gadkari, the tunnel will not only offer a swift travel alternative for commuters but will also play a key role in the long-term urban decongestion strategy for the National Capital Region (NCR).

The main objective of this tunnel is to reduce traffic jams and make Delhi a pollution-free city, he emphasised.

Every day, lakhs of commuters travel the 28-30 km stretch between Delhi and Gurugram, often spending up to 90 minutes on the road amid bumper-to-bumper traffic. With ever-increasing vehicle registration numbers, including over 4.5 lakh two-wheelers, 1.9 lakh cars, and more than 17,000 trucks in the capital in the last fiscal year alone, existing roads are bursting at the seams.

In response, the Ministry of Road Transport has earmarked Rs 1 lakh crore for various projects aimed at making Delhi’s roads jam-free in the coming years. The Delhi-Gurugram tunnel forms a key component of this massive infrastructure overhaul.

While the plan has created buzz, the project is still in its infancy. Officials confirm that the idea is in the preliminary study stage, and final details regarding design, funding, and construction timelines will be determined only after the consultant submits its report.
