A new Vande Bharat linking Bengaluru, Mangaluru and Goa may launch soon, promising faster travel on a scenic Western Ghats-Konkan route and a boost for tourism

The proposed Bengaluru-Mangaluru-Madgaon Vande Bharat comes amid rapid expansion of India’s modern rail network, with new services increasingly targeting both economic corridors and tourism routes.
Rail travellers may soon have a new high-speed option connecting Bengaluru, Mangaluru and Goa, with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announcing that a new Vande Bharat service on the corridor is expected to begin operations soon.
The proposed train will mark another expansion of India’s fast-growing semi-high-speed rail network and is set to run through the Western Ghats and along the Konkan coast, a route long regarded as scenic, but also technically challenging. The announcement came during the minister’s recent visit to Bengaluru, where he attended the inauguration of a high-speed train manufacturing facility at BEML.
Speaking to Akashvani and Doordarshan, Ashwini Vaishnaw also spoke about India’s high-speed rail ambitions, saying the prototype of the indigenous bullet train is expected next year, with production likely in the latter half of 2027.
Bengaluru To Goa Through A Scenic And Challenging Corridor
The upcoming Vande Bharat is proposed to run between Bengaluru and Mangaluru, with an extension to Madgaon in Goa, creating a premium rail link across three major travel hubs. The route has long been seen as difficult from an engineering standpoint because of steep gradients through the Western Ghats. However, the minister said those technical hurdles have now been addressed, as reported in The Times Of India.
According to official indications, the service is expected to be operated by South Western Railway. The new service may also connect with the existing Mangaluru-Madgaon Vande Bharat, which currently covers the 319-km route in around four-and-a-half hours.
If integrated, the link could create a more seamless rail corridor between Bengaluru, coastal Karnataka and Goa.
Potential Tourism Boost For Three Major Destinations
The proposed corridor is also being viewed as a potential boost for tourism, connecting three major destinations popular with both domestic and international travellers.
- Bengaluru: Often referred to as India’s Silicon Valley, Bengaluru is a major business and travel hub.
- Mangaluru: Seen as the gateway to coastal Karnataka, Mangaluru is known for its beaches, heritage temples and coastal culture.
- Madgaon: Being at the heart of one of India’s most visited tourism destinations, Madgaon serves as a key gateway to Goa.
With rail journeys between these regions often time-consuming at present, the Vande Bharat service is expected to significantly cut travel time and improve convenience.
What The New Vande Bharat Could Offer
Like other trains in the Vande Bharat fleet, the proposed service is expected to include several modern onboard features, including:
- Automatic plug doors
- KAVACH train collision avoidance system
- Reclining ergonomic seating
- CCTV surveillance
- Wi-Fi connectivity
- Vacuum-based bio-toilets
- Top speed capability of up to 180 kmph
These features have been central to the positioning of Vande Bharat as India’s premium semi-high-speed rail service.
Bengaluru-Mumbai Rail Upgrades
Alongside the coastal Vande Bharat announcement, the Railway Minister also indicated that a superfast train and a Vande Bharat sleeper service between Bengaluru and Mumbai could begin operations soon. That points to a broader push to strengthen premium rail connectivity from Bengaluru across major corridors.
The proposed Bengaluru-Mangaluru-Madgaon Vande Bharat comes amid rapid expansion of India’s modern rail network, with new services increasingly targeting both economic corridors and tourism routes.
If launched as expected, the train could become one of the most scenic Vande Bharat routes in the country, and a major addition to connectivity across the Western Ghats and Konkan coast.
