Harry Kane, a striker for Bayern Munich and England, was presented with the Golden Shoe award on Tuesday in the Bavarian city, marking his achievement as the top goalscorer in a European football league.
During the previous Bundesliga season, Kane scored more goals than any other player in Europe with 36.
Kane had been the top scorer in the Premier League three times, but he had never taken home the trophy.
Kane exclaimed, “It’s a fantastic feeling.””
The winner is everyone. I wouldn’t be standing here right now without you.
“I am excited about the next season and I feel terrific. I have fresh energy.
“I’m honoured to be given this award,”
The accolade was the most recent in a lengthy string of individual honours that the striker has received, but Kane has never in his career won a team championship.
In his first season in Munich, Kane ended the season without a trophy—a first for the team since 2012.
“I want to continue as I started last season, but winning titles is important,” he said to reporters. Our goal is to succeed as a unit.
Just five goals separate Kane’s 36 goals in 32 Bayern appearances from the single-season record of 41 held by former Bayern striker Robert Lewandowski.
CEO of Bayern Munich Jan-Christian Dreesen presented the prize to the England captain, praising Kane’s character since moving to Munich a season ago.
The Golden Shoe, which was first given to the greatest scorer in any European league in 1967–1968—was modified in 1997 to utilise a rating system that gives players in higher-ranked leagues an advantage.
Lionel Messi is the winner of the award the most, having won six times. Erling Haaland, Messi, and Cristiano Ronaldo are the past winners of the honour.
“That I am now mentioned in the same breath as these names is something special,” Kane remarked.
