Alka Yagnik is a well-known Indian playback singer who has achieved success with several Bollywood hits and a lovely voice. But the singer has been absent from the scene for a while. Alka finally broke her silence on the subject on June 18th, sharing the reason behind her prolonged absence on social media. A few weeks prior, when I was leaving an aircraft, I felt as though my hearing had suddenly stopped. She went on to discuss what caused her hearing loss, saying, “My doctors have diagnosed me with a rare sensory neural nerve hearing loss that is the result of a viral infection. This significant, unexpected setback has absolutely caught me off guard. Please remember me in your prayers while I make an effort to accept it.”
Alka also sent a warning to her followers and admirers about the dangers of wearing earbuds and loud music since they can damage their hearing. “I would also want to add a word of warning regarding exposure to really loud music and headphones for my fans and my younger colleagues. I hope to talk about the health risks associated with my work life someday,” she remarked.
The backing singer went on to say that she will be putting her health first and taking a temporary hiatus from her career. “With all of your love and encouragement, I hope to refocus my life and get back to you soon. In this crucial hour, your understanding and support will mean the world to me,” she continued.
How wearing earbuds can cause hearing loss
- Elevated volume levels
Long-term exposure to noise levels higher than 85 dB can harm inner ear hair cells, which can result in irreversible hearing loss. - Extended usage of headphones
The risk of noise-induced hearing loss increases while listening to music or other audio through earbuds for prolonged periods of time without taking breaks. - Over-ear headphones versus earbuds
Sound can reach the eardrum more directly with earbuds since they are positioned just inside the ear canal. Compared to over-ear headphones, this may result in greater ear damage. - Sound pressure magnitudes
High sound pressure levels from wearing earbuds can strain and exhaust the auditory system. Over time, all of these may result in hearing loss.
How can I avoid damaging my hearing when wearing headphones?
The 60/60 rule, which states that you should listen at 60% volume for no more than 60 minutes at a time, is an easy trick to remember. This will prevent overexposure to loud noises, which may cause hearing damage, by giving your ears enough rest in between extended periods of time spent using headphones.
