The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the extension of the Ahmedabad Metro corridor from GIFT City to Shahpur, a move aimed at strengthening urban connectivity in the fast-growing financial district.

The 3.33-kilometre extension will be implemented by the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited (GMRC) and will include three elevated stations. The project is expected to be completed within four years at an estimated cost of Rs 1,067.35 crore.

According to official estimates, the corridor is projected to serve around 23,702 passengers daily by 2029, with ridership expected to rise to nearly 58,059 by 2041. Authorities believe the extension will emerge as a key transport link between Ahmedabad and Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City), which is rapidly developing as a major financial and business hub.

The metro extension is expected to improve accessibility for employees, students and visitors travelling between Ahmedabad and GIFT City, where several multinational companies, educational institutions and commercial establishments are located. Officials said the project would help reduce road congestion while improving network integration and passenger convenience.

The construction phase is expected to generate direct employment for about 1,000 people. After completion, approximately 250 additional jobs are likely to be created for operations and maintenance, with further indirect employment opportunities anticipated across related sectors.

At present, the Ahmedabad Metro network comprises two operational phases covering 68.28 kilometres and 53 stations. The corridors, inaugurated in September 2022 and January 2026, currently serve around 1.6 lakh passengers daily. Officials said the new extension would help meet rising transport demand and further strengthen the city’s urban mobility infrastructure.
