COVID-19: New variants of Covid-19 have knocked in India once again. According to the latest report of INSACOG (Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium), one case of NB.1.8.1 variant and four cases of LF.7 variant have been reported in the country. These are the same variants, which are being considered responsible for the rapid increase in new cases of corona infection in China and many parts of Asia. The World Health Organization (WHO) has also kept these variants under its surveillance.

In recent days, there has been an increase in Covid cases in many areas of the country. 23 new cases were registered in Delhi, four cases were reported in Andhra Pradesh in the last 24 hours, one Covid positive has been confirmed in Telangana. In May, 273 cases have been reported in Kerala alone.

What are the LF.7 and NB.1.8.1 subvariants?

The World Health Organization has considered the LF.7 and NB.1.8.1 subvariants as variants to be monitored. However, it is not yet seen as a variant of concern. However, these are the variants that are reportedly causing a surge in Covid cases in China and parts of Asia.

According to data from the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG), one case of the NB.1.8.1 variant was reported in Tamil Nadu in April, while four cases of the LF.7 variant were reported in Gujarat in May. WHO’s preliminary assessment considers the NB.1.8.1 variant to be of low global health risk. But its spike protein mutations – A435S, V445H, and T478I indicate higher infectivity and immune evasion potential than other variants.

However, the JN.1 variant is the most widespread in India, accounting for 53% of the samples tested. This is followed by BA.2 at 26% and other Omicron sublineages at 20%.

Know what are the symptoms of NB.1.8.1?

Sore throat, fatigue, mild cough, fever, muscle pain, nasal congestion, persistent low-grade hyperthermia (increased body temperature, different from normal fever), headache, nausea and loss of appetite are some of the major symptoms by which the NB.1.8.1 variant can be identified. If any of these symptoms appear, get tested immediately.

How dangerous is the NB.1.8.1 variant?

NB.1.8.1 has shown a higher rate of infectivity than some older variants. Initial analyses indicate that it may have a better ability to attach to human cells, potentially contributing to an increase in infection rates. This variant has been identified in international travellers arriving at major US airports, including California, Washington, Virginia and New York. Although some countries where NB.1.8.1 is more prevalent have reported an increase in the number of cases and hospitalizations, current data do not indicate that this variant causes more severe disease.

How to avoid new variants?

Get booster shots with two COVID-19 vaccines to protect yourself and others. Wear a mask in crowded or closed spaces. Keep hands clean. Wash hands frequently. Monitor symptoms and get tested immediately if you feel unwell. Follow local health guidelines and advice.
