Noida : Gautam Budh Nagar stood still on April 13, as the district came together in a deeply moving tribute to its fallen heroes. The occasion marked the 25th Dedication Day of the district’s revered Shaheed Smarak, a symbol of sacrifice and national pride that continues to echo the bravery of India’s finest.

Of lives that chose the nation, before they ever knew
This solemn day traces back to April 13, 2002, when the nation’s only Tri-Service Memorial was dedicated by the Chiefs of the Army, Navy and Air Force. Built in the aftermath of the Kargil War, the memorial stands as a powerful reminder of the ultimate sacrifice made by soldiers from Gautam Budh Nagar. The cenotaph bears the names of 45 Shaheeds, permanently etched in stone, each name a story of valour, duty and unwavering patriotism.

On its 25th anniversary in 2026, the tribute unfolded in an atmosphere of quiet dignity and emotional intensity. As dusk settled, Lt Gen G.L. Bakshi (Retd), Chairman of the Sanstha, initiated the ceremony by lighting the first candle at the base of the cenotaph. That single flame soon multiplied into hundreds, as families of the martyrs stepped forward, carrying with them memories, pride, and silent strength.
Among them were Uma Nauriyal, Tripta Thapar, Neelam Kumar, Nargis Naqvi, Col KKK Singh, Anjali Karkare, Kamal K Chajgotra, Savita Singh, Dr Naresh Sharma, and Sunita Chhibber. Each candle they lit was not just a gesture, but a deeply personal homage to loved ones who gave everything for the nation.
They were joined by senior veterans and dignitaries, including Lt Gen R. Chadha (Retd), Executive Director of Shaheed Smarak, Lt Gen S.K. Verma, Maj Gen D.K. Sen, Brigadier Bali and several respected officers and citizens. Students from Army Public School, along with residents of Gautam Budh Nagar, stood shoulder to shoulder in a shared moment of gratitude.
As the evening deepened, the memorial transformed into a breathtaking sea of light. Hundreds of candles flickered in unison, casting a golden glow over the cenotaph. The air carried a profound silence, broken only by the quiet footsteps of those approaching to pay their respects. Passers-by, drawn by the powerful visual and emotional pull, stopped to join the tribute, adding their own flames to the growing constellation of remembrance.
It was more than a ceremony. It was a collective heartbeat of a community that refuses to forget. A reminder that behind every name carved in stone lies a story of courage, a family’s sacrifice, and a nation’s eternal debt.
Twenty-five years on, the Shaheed Smarak continues to stand not just as a monument, but as a living testament to valour. And on this night, under the soft glow of countless candles, Gautam Budh Nagar once again proved that its heroes are remembered not just in history, but in the hearts of its people.
