What is ADHD?

A neurodevelopmental condition known as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) usually first manifests in infancy and frequently lasts into adulthood. It is typified by a recurring pattern of impulsivity, hyperactivity, and inattention that impedes growth or functioning.

  • The two main groups of symptoms associated with ADHD are inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity.
  • Lack of focusDifficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play activities
  • Frequent careless mistakes in schoolwork or other activities
  • Difficulty organizing tasks and activities
  • Avoidance or dislike of tasks that require sustained mental effort
  • Frequently losing items necessary for tasks
  • Easily distracted by extraneous stimuli
  • Forgetfulness in daily activities

Hyperactivity-Impulsivity

  • Fidgeting or tapping hands and feet
  • Inability to stay seated in situations where it is expected
  • Running or climbing in inappropriate situations
  • Inability to play or engage in activities quietly
  • Talking excessively
  • Blurting out answers before questions are completed
  • Difficulty waiting for one’s turn
  • Interrupting or intruding on others’ conversations or games

A medical practitioner will usually make the diagnosis based on these symptoms, how long they last, and how much of an influence they have on the patient’s life. The symptoms must be out of character for the person’s developmental stage and must have persisted for at least six months.

Although the precise etiology of ADHD is unknown, a number of factors, including genetics, brain chemistry, and environmental factors, are thought to play a role. Premature birth, prenatal alcohol or tobacco use, and a family history of ADHD are risk factors.

The usual approach to managing ADHD is a mix of behavioral treatment, medication, and educational assistance. Amphetamines and methylphenidate are two stimulant drugs that are frequently used and have the ability to effectively lessen symptoms. There are also drugs that don’t stimulate. Developing organizational skills, sharpening concentration, and controlling impulsivity are the main goals of behavioral therapy. Classroom accommodations and customized teaching methods are common components of educational interventions.
